Faculty Reviews

Overview

Full-time faculty at the School of Professional Studies (SPS) undergo periodic reviews based on their title and track (Lecturer and Practice). These evaluations assess performance in four key areas: teaching, instructional development, service, professional growth, and/or scholarship. The criteria may vary depending on the faculty member's rank and track. This structured review process helps ensure ongoing professional development and maintains high standards of academic quality throughout a faculty member's tenure at SPS.

Ongoing Professional Activity Records

Maintaining an up-to-date record of professional activities is crucial for full-time faculty members, particularly as these activities play a vital role in the faculty review process. Regular documentation of achievements, research, publications, and collaborations not only aids in the review process but also provides a clear picture of one's academic growth and contributions. This practice allows faculty to present a comprehensive portfolio during reviews, highlighting their progress and impact in their field. Moreover, tracking professional activities helps identify areas for improvement, set new goals, and showcase contributions to the School of Professional Studies and Columbia University as a whole.

By consistently documenting professional endeavors, faculty members can more effectively demonstrate their value, secure opportunities, and contribute to their academic community, all of which are carefully considered during the faculty review process.

  • Sample A&S Faculty Information Form (FIF)
    • Full-time faculty members are required to complete the Faculty Information Form (FIF) on an annual basis, which is collected and maintained by the School of Arts & Sciences (A&S) to track academic activities, research progress, and professional accomplishments. In early March, A&S will circulate the FIF to all full-time faculty.
  • Statement of Professional and Scholarly Accomplishments Guidelines
    • This guide assists SPS full-time faculty in crafting a concise narrative of their professional and scholarly achievements. It should highlight key contributions to their field, outline career goals, and demonstrate how recent projects have furthered these objectives. The resulting document can serve as a foundation for developing a comprehensive dossier for review and promotion purposes, typically including an updated CV and evidence of scholarly work, teaching excellence, and service contributions.
